Frequent or recurring muscle spasms can make it hard to sleep, exercise, work, or enjoy your hobbies. At Jochen Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Beverly Hills, CA, our chiropractors and team of specialists work together to understand the underlying cause of your muscle spasms and help you prevent them or reduce their occurrence.

What Is a Muscle Spasm?

A muscle spasm, muscle twitch, or muscle cramp is an involuntary and forceful contraction of the muscle. The muscle can’t relax, causing pain, stress, tightness, and discomfort. Muscle spasms can occur in any muscle in the body, including the legs, arms, neck, fingers, stomach, and even tongue. They can occur at any time, even when you are sleeping. They often occur after periods of physical activity, like a workout or athletic performance.

What Are the Symptoms of Muscle Spasms?

The primary symptom of a muscle spasm is the feeling that your muscle is suddenly contracting, twitching, or jumping around on its own. You will feel pain, tightness, and discomfort. In some cases, muscle spasms occur alongside other symptoms, such as:

  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Numbness or a pins and needles feeling
  • Paralysis
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Issues with coordination or balance
  • Vision problems

Why Do Muscle Spasms Happen?

Muscle spasms typically occur because the muscle is tight, overtired, or stressed out due to either overexertion or lack of use. You may be more likely to experience muscle spasms if you:

  • Don’t stretch before working out
  • Live a sedentary lifestyle
  • Have nutritional or vitamin deficiencies
  • Don’t get enough sleep
  • Are dehydrated or have an electrolyte imbalance
  • Are under a lot of stress
  • Complete a high-intensity workout
  • Overuse or over-exert your muscles
  • Spend a long time standing on a hard floor like concrete
  • Sit improperly

What Are Treatments for Muscle Spasms?

If you only get muscle spasms occasionally, you can treat them with rest, ice, and therapeutic stretching. If you get muscle spasms regularly, you should visit our office for an exam and evaluation so that we can determine the underlying cause of your muscle spasms. We may combine therapies, including chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, cupping, laser therapy, and diet and lifestyle modification counseling.
