Scoliosis Q & A

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a chronic condition that causes the spine to unnaturally bend side to side. A healthy spine's curvature has a front-to-back “S” bend. In those with scoliosis, the spine forms into a side-to-side “C.” This “C” curve must be greater than 10 degrees to classify as scoliosis.

Beyond the physical aspects of the curved spine, such as uneven hips and shoulders, scoliosis has other symptoms. Those with scoliosis may experience regular backaches, particularly in the lower back, and may notice that the spine tires easily when sitting or standing for long periods of time.

What causes scoliosis?

The cause of scoliosis is unknown for about 80% of individuals. This is called idiopathic scoliosis.

In structural scoliosis the spine becomes rigid and immobile. Issues that can cause this condition are:

  • Birth defects
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Genetic conditions, including Down syndrome and Marfan syndrome
  • Infections
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Tumors

Nonstructural scoliosis makes the spine look curved but it still functions properly. This condition is caused by one leg being longer than the other, muscle spasms, or because of certain inflammatory conditions such as appendicitis.

How is scoliosis treated?

The type of scoliosis you have and its severity determines the course of treatment your chiropractor will implement. Dr. Jochen and his team may recommend a variety of treatments to balance the spine, move it toward alignment, improve spine mobility and function, and reduce pain.

Some of the most common scoliosis treatments are:

  • Cold laser therapy
  • Gentle spinal manipulations
  • Scoliosis-specific exercises
  • Therapeutic massage

During some of these treatments your doctor may use mechanical instruments to protect your spine.

Scoliosis treatments are never rough or jarring and use pain-free techniques to gently move the spine into alignment and stop its degradation.
