Sciatica Q & A

What causes sciatica?

Spinal misalignment or a bulging disc often causes inflammation or pinches the sciatic nerve which leads to sciatic pain. Your sciatic nerve is a large nerve at the base of the spine that travels down both legs to your feet. The nerve is almost as thick as your thumb at the point right above the tailbone. That makes this area vulnerable to inflammation.

Other issues that can compress your sciatic nerve are:

  • Constipation
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Diabetes
  • Poor posture
  • Spinal tumors and spinal stenosis

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Although sciatica can manifest differently in each case, there are common symptoms. The most prominent sign of sciatica is pain in the following areas:

  • Glutes
  • Hips
  • Legs
  • Lower back

This pain may feel dull, aching, burning, or sharp and often radiates from one area to another. Sciatica pain often occurs in one leg; your leg or foot may also feel weak or numb.

Sometimes these symptoms are severe, whereas other times they disappear entirely. You may experience flare-ups or notice symptoms worsen with specific activities.

How is sciatica treated?

In many cases, your provider will use a traction device to decompress the spine to relieve pressure on your spinal discs; bulging discs can return to their normal placement afterwards. Decompression reduces compression on your sciatic nerve and relieves the symptoms you may be feeling.

Traditional spinal manipulations to readjust the spine and optimize its placement may be used as well. In other cases, acupuncture or cold laser will be recommended in conjunction with other treatments.

Dr. Jochen may give you exercises to do at home to relax the tight muscles around your spine so the adjustments he made are reinforced. Ice or heat may also help with any discomfort.
