Scoliosis Q & A

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a chronic condition that causes the spine to unnaturally bend side to side. A healthy spine's curvature has a front-to-back “S” bend. In those with scoliosis, the spine forms into a side-to-side “C.” If you have scoliosis, this “C” curve must be greater than 10 degrees.

Beyond the physical aspects of the curved spine, such as uneven hips and shoulders, scoliosis has other symptoms. Most commonly, those with scoliosis may experience regular backaches, particularly in the lower back, and may notice that the spine tires easily, especially when sitting or standing for long periods of time.

What causes scoliosis?

In most cases — some estimate as many as 80% — the cause of scoliosis is unknown, referred to as idiopathic scoliosis.

In structural scoliosis, the spine becomes rigid and immobile. A range of issues can cause this irreversible condition:

  • Birth defects
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Genetic conditions, including Down syndrome and Marfan syndrome
  • Infections
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Tumors

Nonstructural scoliosis makes the spine look curved, but it functions properly. This condition happens when one leg is longer than the other, by muscle spasms, or because of certain inflammatory conditions such as appendicitis.

How is scoliosis treated?

The type of scoliosis you have and its severity determine the course of treatment your doctor at the Jochen Chiropractic and Wellness Center chooses.

Dr. Jochen and his team may recommend a variety of treatments to balance the spine, move it toward alignment, improve spine mobility and function, and reduce pain.

Here are some of the most common scoliosis treatments:

  • Cold laser therapy
  • Gentle spinal manipulations
  • Scoliosis-specific exercises
  • Therapeutic massage

During some of these treatments, your doctor may use mechanical instruments to protect your spine.

Scoliosis treatments are never rough or jarring and only use pain-free techniques to gently move the spine back toward the center and stop its degradation.

When you think you may have scoliosis and are looking for a solution to increase mobility and decrease pain, find it with Dr. Jochen and his team at the Jochen Chiropractic and Wellness Center. Call the office today to schedule your initial consultation or book it online.
