Sciatica Q & A

What causes sciatica?

Spinal misalignment or a bulging disc often cause inflammation or pinch the sciatic nerve, leading to the pain of sciatica.

Your sciatic nerve is a large nerve at the base of the spine that travels down both legs to your feet. Where it leaves the spine, right above the tailbone, the nerve is almost as thick as your thumb. That makes this area especially vulnerable to inflammation.

Other issues can compress your sciatic nerve:

  • Constipation
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Diabetes
  • Poor posture
  • Spinal tumors and spinal stenosis

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Although sciatica can manifest differently in each case, there are common symptoms. The most prominent sign of sciatica is pain in the following areas:

  • Glutes
  • Hips
  • Legs
  • Lower back

This pain may feel dull, aching, burning, or sharp and often radiates from one area to another. Sciatica pain often occurs in only one leg; your leg or foot may also feel weak or numb.

Sometimes these symptoms are severe, whereas other times they disappear entirely. You may experience flare-ups or notice symptoms worsen with specific activities.

How is sciatica treated?

Dr. Jochen and his team offer a variety of treatments for sciatica.

In many cases, your provider uses a traction device to decompress the spine to relieve pressure on your spinal discs; then, bulging discs can return to their normal placement. Decompression reduces compression on your sciatic nerve and relieves the symptoms of sciatica.

Dr. Jochen may use traditional spinal manipulations to readjust the spine, optimizing its placement. In other cases, he may recommend acupuncture or cold laser in conjunction with other treatments.

To enhance your recovery, Dr. Jochen may give you exercises to do at home. These can relax the tight muscles that pull the spine back out of alignment and help support the adjustments he made. Ice or heat may also help with any discomfort.

When the pain in your glutes and legs interferes with your daily functioning, don’t turn to harmful and addictive pharmaceuticals. Find a natural solution to pain at the Jochen Chiropractic and Wellness Center. Call the office today to schedule your consultation or book online now.
