Written By Jochen Chiropractic and Wellness Center on August 28, 2020

rsz sciaticaThe sciatic nerve is the farthest-reaching nerve in the body and spans from the lower back to the hips, buttocks, legs, and feet.

Sciatica, which is also called neuralgia, referred pain, or neuropathy, is a pain in the lower back that travels into the hips and one or both legs. Other symptoms of sciatica include shooting leg pain, numbness, tingling, and burning sensations.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatic nerve compression causes sciatica. It is a symptom of the following disorders:

  • Misaligned spine or subluxation
  • Bulging discs
  • Spinal tumors
  • Spasm and cramping of the piriformis muscle located at the lower spine
  • Non-spinal diseases such as diabetes
  • Constipation
  • Hip arthritis

Pregnancy and childbirth, injuries from slipping or falling, and repetitive movement resulting in wear and tear can also cause sciatica.

Chiropractic Care for Sciatica

Your Beverly Hills chiropractor will remove the pressure on the sciatic nerve and restore motion and flow in the lower back, legs, and pelvis, to address sciatica by performing the following treatments:

Spinal Decompression

Your experienced chiropractor will use a traction device for spinal decompression to elongate the spine and widen the vertebrae's spaces. Spinal decompression takes the pressure away from the sciatic nerve and relieves pain and other sciatica symptoms.

Spinal Adjustments

Your chiropractor will apply spinal manipulations that vary from gentle pressure to quick thrusts to return a bulging disc to its position and remove stress on the sciatic nerve. These adjustments lessen pain, promotes nerve signal and flow, and eases muscle spasm.

Chiropractic Massage

Your chiropractor will perform deep targeted pressure to your musculoskeletal system to help your body release endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and deep muscle relaxation. Your chiropractor may also suggest a choice between acupuncture, cold laser therapy, and chiropractic massage to alleviate pain.
